Roots of Empathy Begins at Trafalgar
Mme. Rozee’s 8-2 class is the most recent recipient of one of British Columbia’s most successful educational programs. Last week, they met little Avery! She will be joining them every three weeks and as she grows, she’ll evoke curiosity, interest, self-reflection, and empathy in the Grade 8s who will get to know her. Fun facts:
- 97% of teachers feel that the Roots of Empathy program supports the school’s curriculum
- 91% of teachers strongly agreed or agreed that as a result of Roots of Empathy, students are more able to understand other people’s points of view
- 92% of students reported that if they saw a friend being bullied or treated meanly, they would help them
The Roots of Empathy organization has a deep and rich history in British Columbia. BC was one of the first provinces to embrace Roots of Empathy programs for elementary school children and BC co-piloted the Seeds of Empathy program for children 3-5 years old in childcare centres. Since 2000, we’ve reached over 173,000 children in 81% of BC’s school districts, across all five health regions.
